Dave Arnold was a moderately successful PBA touring pro in the 1990s, with one title to his credit before he bowled in the final match of the 1996 Reno Open. In his earlier PBA victory he defeated Walter Ray Williams, Jr in the final match. Could he do it again to win his second title? An exciting match that would go down to the 10th frame. Part 1 of 2.

1982 Hartford Open – Pete Weber vs. Pete McCordic – pt1

The date was April 17, 1982 at Bradley Bowl in Windsor Locks, CT for the Greater Hartford Open. Pete Weber, who made 5 prior TV shows in 1982 was knocking on the door for his first PBA title. Pete, just 19 years old, qualified 3rd that day, and defeated Jeff Bellinger, and the late Jeff Mattingly to meet #1 qualifier Pete McCordic. I remember the match as if it were yesterday. Pete was rooted on by his first wife, DeeDee. The Weber / McCordic match was another one that was tense, and went down to the final frame. Weber prevailed for his first PBA title, the 000 first prize, and qualified for the Firestone the very next week. 5 Years later, in '87, McCordic went on, as you know to bowl the first perfect game on TV in 13 years. In the announce booth was Dave Diles, who regularly filled in while Chris Schenkel was on assignment. It's too bad Dick and Pete never faced off on TV, that would have been something to see. On a personal note, I've followed Webers career from the beginning when he first appeared on TV at Garden City, NY in 1980 through present day. Pete is one of my favorites to watch. 1998 Women’s College Bowling – Kelly Kulick

The final of the 1998 Women's Intercollegiate Bowling Championships saw Morehead State, anchored by future Team USA member and future PWBA and PBA star Kelly Kulick, face Central Missouri State. The format was a 2-game Baker match, total pins wins. Kulick would need to step up in the 10th and throw a strike to win the title for her team. This might be the final time Bo Burton ever commentated bowling on national television, as his run on the ABC Pro Bowlers Tour ended in 1997. Jay Randolph, one of my favorite bowling announcers, is on the play-by-play. Joined in progress during the second game. I was in attendance at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse (directly adjacent to Camp Randall Stadium) in Madison, Wisconsin in 1998 when this match was held. Great memories. Go Badgers!

SUNDAY, JAN. 9, 1 PM EASTERN After a one-week break the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour returns to ESPN this Sunday with an international flavor and a unique team format. The PBA World Series of Bowling's team event pits six American bowlers who finished highest in the 60-game qualifying session against six international players who had fared best while bowling 12 games per day on five different lane conditions. The six-man team event will award one point for each of six head-to-head matches, plus three points to the team with the highest total pinfall. Making up the US team will be 2008-09 PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott, 2007-08 Player of the Year Chris Barnes, two-time Tour Champion Michael Haugen Jr., 2010 Viper winner Bill O'Neill, four-time Tour titlist Sean Rash and Ronnie Russell. Making up the International squad will be PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, two-handed specialists Jason Belmonte of Australia and Osku Palermaa of Finland who won the 2010 Shark Championship. The finale of the final ABC Pro Bowlers Tour telecast of all time couldn't have been more poetic. Two of the bowlers who made the program the legendary program it was, Walter Ray Williams, Jr. and Pete Weber, squared off in an epic match. Bo Burton and Chris Schenkel are clearly choking back the emotion throughout this match, as it's not one too be missed. A classic match in its own right, regardless of the circumstances. PS: after this match, Walter Ray stuck around, won a regional tour victory at the same house, and became the first bowler to top million in PBA earnings. Part 2 of 2.

1982 PBA National – Earl Anthony vs. Charlie Tapp, pt1

The date was Feb. 27, 1982 at the Imperial Lanes in Toledo, Ohio. It's a day that I will never forget watching. Earl Anthony owned the PBA National, and Imperial Lanes. Earl, the defending champion, qualified 1st, and needed to taste victory to become the first PBA player to reach million in career earnings. He was up against my friend, Charlie Tapp, who had qualified 5th, and plowed through Dave Davis, Steve Westberg, and Mike Durbin in order to challenge Earl for the title. It wasn't Tapper's day as Earl was victorious, 233-191, and earned his 5th PBA National, and the 000 top prize. Earl would come back in 1983 to defend his title, once again, ending up with 6 PBA National titles. Sit back, and enjoy the final game of the 1982 PBA National.

Here's the exciting conclusion of the 1981 PBA National Championship. Both players had their trouble in the 10th. You gotta love how Earl looks to the heavens and says "thank you" when its all over...once again...enjoy Here is another story about Earl Anthony from a buddy of mine Howie "G": Some of the little things Earl (and others) would do (in warm-up), also aided them in their TV matches. For example, Earl would take a dull Urethane (or rubber) ... and throw repeated shots "left" of his intended target line. This would create a "dry" area (to the left) ... and allow him to "bounce" his "tamer" ball back to the pocket (if he missed left!) Therefore, sometimes his being the only "lefty" in the field, was a huge advantage to him. Ironically it was his "2nd" place finishes, that drove him to believe that a conspiracy "against him" was in the works. He would comment that the "shot" that allowed him to lead in qualifying rounds, was radically different than the TV pairs.

1998 PBA Brunswick J. Petraglia Open – Voss vs. Criss (Pt.1)

After its successful run on ABC, PBA telecasts moved to CBS, with commentators Gary Seidel and Marshall Holman providing the commentary. Also new were the gold pins used for the telecast. The gold pins were a few ounces heavier than normal bowling pins, with the supposed effect of keeping scores low and matches competitive. The telecasts lasted an hour long, with a three-man preliminary match between the #2, #3, and #4 seeds with the best score meeting the #1 seed in the final. In the final of the 1998 Brunswick Johnny Petraglia Open, top seed Tim Criss (with a different hairstyle...hmm...) met Brian Voss. It's a great match. Part 1 of 2.

It was the summer PBA Tour of 1974 at Edison Lanes, NJ for the 000 NJ Open which was televised by HBO Sports. The announcer was Dick Stockton with Skee Foremsky doing the color. This is real old school bowling with a couple of up and coming rookies. There is also a nice shot of Earl with the brush cut! They mentioned that Edison had 112 Lanes, without poles...can you imagine what that must have looked like? I wonder if they had a 112 team league? I'm sure in those days that place was probably rocking, and full of people. Who can name all the bowlers shown in the intro? I recognize all but 1. I hope you enjoy!

I have mixed feelings about arena finals. On one hand, they are unfair to the tournament leaders who have dominated at a particular bowling center, gotten accustomed to the lanes, and have worked hard to win the top spot. Put them in an arena and their advantage, except for their top seed, flies away. On the other hand, arena finals are tons of fun for the viewers both in the arena and at home, as the bowlers often give outstanding performances (think Bob Learn, Jr.) and throw lots of strikes. The final of the 1998 PBA National Finance Championship between Brian Voss and Walter Ray Williams, Jr. has to rank among the most exciting. Lots of strikes, a clutch 10th frame, and big-time emotion out of both players. I think the audience in Virginia Beach was on speed. Part 2 of 2.

After a commercial break, the decision was made to change Parker's spare to a foul. He'd recover to win the title over Pete Weber. Very interesting match. Part 1 of 2.

A viper strikes with multiple angles of attack. This pattern will challenge players to attack the pins from multiple angles in order to score well. Viper measures 37 feet in oil distance, and more than any of the other patterns, can yield a wide variety of strategies for attack depending on the type and condition of the lane surface (ie, wood, synthetic, etc.). The scoring pace is normally medium to high for this pattern.

1981 PBA National – Earl Anthony vs. Ernie Schlegel pt1

The date was March 7, 1981 at the Imperial Lanes in Toledo, Ohio when Earl Anthony qualified number 1 for the PBA National. He faced Ernie Schlegel, who was wearing one of his famous outfits. Ernie was coming off wins against Dave Davis, and Dick Weber. It was an exciting match that came down to the final ball that saw Earl win his 35th career title, and his 4th PBA National Championship up to that point in time. In my opinion, Earl was the best. He accomplished more in a shorter amount of time than any other bowler in PBA history. The '81 PBA National was Earl's 3rd victory in 4 weeks, and he won a 4th title a few weeks later in Garden City. He was dominate in 1981 after coming back from the heart attack a few years back. In fact, Earl went on to become the Bowler of the Year in 1981, for the 4 time. He went on to become bowler of the year, once again, in 1982 and 1983 before retiring prior to the 1984 season. He truly went out at the top of his game. As far as Schlegel, his style was timeless (like Anthony's). If you watch the 1996 TPC, (the famous Pederson stone 8 victory), his style is basically the same. It was also good to see tournament director, Harry Golden, a few times, as Earl requested 4 re-racks throughout the match..probably Harry's busiest time on TV! This pattern forces bowlers to play deep inside the center of the lanes, like sharks that troll the depths of the ocean. Shark is the longest of the five patterns, measuring 44 feet of oil. Typical to the length and design, professionals will migrate more towards the center of the lane as the ball normally will not hook back to the pocket if it strays too far outside near the gutter. This pattern usually requires extreme inside angles to get to the pocket after five or six games. The scoring pace is normally high for this pattern.

Chameleons change color to outsmart their enemies. To excel on this pattern, bowlers must be versatile in many styles of play. Chameleon measures 39 feet and resembles a "retro" approach to pattern design. Oil is placed in "strips" and requires the player to play in a specific zone on the lane, as compared to a "multiple angles" condition. The scoring pace for this pattern can range from low to high, depending on the condition of the surface.

A cheetah may look harmless, but this speedster has a dangerous side. So does this pattern - with a fast scoring pace and play near the gutter, there's no room for error. Cheetah measures 35 feet in length and is the shortest of the five patterns. Sometimes used on lane surfaces that are well worn, it tries to maximize the area on the lane with less wear, which is usually extremely close to the gutter. Because of this, players tend to migrate toward those spots to take advantage of the more pristine surface areas. The cheetah is exciting for its ability to allow players to make "risk-reward" decisions based on playing near the gutter. The scoring pace is normally medium to high for this pattern.

A scorpion is dangerous and unpredictable, like this pattern. If you can't find the right groove on the lanes, you'll be stung! The Scorpion measures 41 feet, and similar to the Viper, can yield a wide variety of strategies depending on the type and condition of the lane surface. However, Scorpion incorporates a larger volume of oil placed further down lane which often demands a more direct line. The scoring pace is normally medium to low for this pattern.
